A man in his mid-80s is dead after his truck collided with a train on the railway tracks at First Avenue. Airdrie RCMP, the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) and EMS were called to the scene just before 2 p.m. June 16.
“ We did respond just before 2 p.m. to find a truck had collided with a northbound freight train,” EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux said. “ The truck had been pushed in a ditch on the east side.”
According to a release issued by the City of Airdrie, crews from the AFD used the Jaws of Life to extricate the man from his badly damaged vehicle. Freeing the man from the vehicle took approximately 10 minutes. His care was then transferred to EMS.
Brideaux said the man was still alive when EMS arrived and crews attempted life-saving measures in the back of the ambulance, however, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
“ There were a number with furrowed brows trying to figure out how this might have happened,” he said.
Residents were asked to stay clear of the area and the railway tracks were closed for approximately three hours.
The man was the lone occupant of the vehicle. There were no injuries to anyone on the train, according to Brideaux.
The collision remains under investigation by Airdrie RCMP.
