The damage is still being assessed and the cause has yet to be determined, however, Rocky View Fire Services District Chief Dax Huba said no one was injured after a garage being used as a workshop caught on fire on Dec. 19 on a rural property near Range Road 293 east of Balzac.

“There were no injuries and no one was in the building when crews arrived. We don’t have a cause of the fire just yet,” Huba said.

“I don’t know what kind of work they were doing in the workshop.”

Crews from Balzac and Irricana originally responded to the 911 call, and were joined by crews from Crossfield and Chestermere, according to Huba.

“The initial report was for a garage fire at approximately 10:30 a.m.,” Huba said.

“When the call came in, the caller was stating there were flames in the windows and through the roof. Crews were on scene in less than eight minutes. The building was fully involved and there was some structural damage.”

According to Huba, the building was entirely destroyed as a result of the fire.

The fire required the attention of 14 firefighters and six apparatus, including fire trucks and water tankers.
