Airdrie’s elderly population will soon have the ability to ride local buses to popular destinations within the city, beginning Oct. 3. The buses will pick seniors up in front of their buildings.

The elderly will soon be able to get around more easily with the Airdrie Transit’s new Community Route No. 60.

The new route will be launched Oct. 3, stopping at Fletcher Village, Luxstone Manor, Woodside Place Condominiums, Bethany Care Centre, Cedarwood Station and Diamond Jubilee. The bus will take seniors to Towerlane Mall, Wal-Mart, the Town and Country Centre, City Hall and Genesis Place.

“We have worked collaboratively with the community to design and implement a transit service targeting Airdrie’s senior population,” said Chris MacIsaac, Airdrie Transit coordinator. “This bus still allows people to have their true independence.”

MacIsaac added the bus will come as close to the doors of seniors’ homes as possible.

The new No. 60 route comes as a welcome addition for Corrine Tansowny, adminstrator at Fletcher Village.

“The new trial service is very timely and exciting,” said Tansowny. “With winter approaching, this gives seniors a great alternative to driving to appointments, shopping and getting out into the community.”

The Community Route will operate on Mondays on a fixed route using a fully accessible bus. Fares will be consistent with the existing local transit service at $2 per trip or with a local transit ticket. Ticket books of 10 can be purchased at Co-op, Shoppers Drug Mart on Main Street, Genesis Place and City Hall.

Service will run from 9:20 a.m. until 3:20 p.m.

The service does not extend to statutory and proclaimed holidays.
