Airdrie Chamber of Commerce appointed its 2012 to 2013 board members during its annual general meeting, May 23 at the Woodside Golf Course.

Mike Watkins, owner of Airdrie’s UPS store, was elected president, replacing Mike De Bokx of Dominion Lending Centres.

Watkins has been a member of the chamber for four years and just came off a term as second vice president.

“I look forward to the challenge and look forward to a really positive and upbeat board and a really positive and upbeat membership,” said Watkins.

Other board members include First Vice President Wade Cormier of Rockyview Insurance Services, Second Vice President Keith Wilkinson of Investors Group, Treasurer Brandy Horn and City of Airdrie Liaison Sara Chamberlain of Airdrie’s economic development department.

Eight directors were also appointed.

Last year, the chamber had 503 members and Watkins said he hopes to maintain a strong membership during his tenure.

“One of my main goals is to continue building this chamber and looking at ways we can increase our ability to promote businesses around Airdrie, to advocate for businesses around Airdrie and increase the interest,” said Watkins.

“I would like to see us continue having a strong membership.”

Watkins said the chamber advocates for businesses and runs various events and programs such as the annual spring Home and Lifestyle Show and Business After Hours.

Upcoming events include the State of the City Address at Woodside Golf Course on June 20 and the annual golf tournament at the same venue on Aug. 17.
