Former Airdrie Mayor Darrell Bennett passed away on Jan. 28, after a battle with cancer, at the age of 79 in Calgary.
He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Patricia Bennett, two daughters, Stacey and Lisa, two sons Barry and Scott, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was involved with a number of community groups, including the Lions Club, Curling Club and Community Association.
During his time as mayor, Darrell and his council were instrumental in securing water and sewer services from the City of Calgary, while seeing Airdrie through one of its greatest periods of growth.
Bennett served as the mayor for 13 years from 1970 to 1983, and in his time in the mayor’s seat, he saw the city’s population grow from 2,500 to 12,000.
Current Mayor Peter Brown spoke highly of Bennett, and kept in regular contact with him, often looking to him for advice.
“He was one of the first people that I contacted when I first decided to run for mayor in 2010,” said Brown.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for what Darrell did for this city through one of our biggest growth periods. He was a phenomenal leader and was always upbeat and positive.”
Brown said he sends his condolences on behalf of Airdrie City council to Darrell’s wife and her family.
“Darrell was someone I admired greatly,” said Brown. “He will truly be missed.”
