A man died in a head-on collision on Highway 567 just west of Symons Valley Road around 3:40 p.m., May 1.

Airdrie RCMP stated it appears an eastbound car veered into the westbound lanes and collided with a west bound semi-truck, killing the driver of the car, believed to be a 50-year-old Calgarian, instantly.

The car burst into flames, shortly after the collision. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.

Airdrie youth victim of collision

Media outlets have reported an 11-year-old Airdronian, Faith Kondusky-Sennett, was one of the victims in the fiery crash that took place on Highway 63 near Fort McMurray, April 27.

The head-on collision, which left seven people dead and two others critically injured, occurred when a northbound truck, carrying three occupants, pulled out to pass another vehicle and then collided with a southbound pick-up truck carrying six occupants.

The RCMP reported passing motorists tried to pull Kondusky-Sennett, a student at Airdrie’s Our Lady Queen of Peace school, from the burning vehicles before emergency crews arrived on scene.

The young girl was air-lifted to an Edmonton-area hospital where she died later that night. Reports confirm Kondusky-Sennett’s father, Dan Sennett, also of Airdrie, died in the crash.

The third passenger of their vehicle also died.

Four people in the southbound truck died including Courtney Penney, and Shannon, Trena and two-year-old Ben Wheaton. Timothy Wheaton, 3, and Mark Penney, 28, were the only survivors of the crash.

Suspicious man in Beiseker

Beiseker RCMP is warning residents about a suspicious man in the Delacour area who was attempting to sell food items from his van, May 3.

A witness contacted police around noon, saying a stranger came to her house around 10 a.m. and asked if she be might interested in some cheap food he had in his van.

The man, who appeared nervous and wouldn’t provide information on his business name or products, inferred a neighbour had identified the witness as a potential customer and tried to convince her to leave her home to look in his van.

The witness refused and the stranger left after he saw a neighbour’s vehicle.

The man is described as being between mid-30s and mid-40s in age, 5’5” tall of medium to slim build with blue eyes and short dirty-blonde hair. He was wearing a white ball cap, blue jeans, a T-shirt, white dirty runners and had stubble on his face.

Chestermere arson

The Chestermere Fire Department has determined arson was the cause of an early morning fire in the town, April 28. Members of the Chestermere RCMP and fire department responded to a house fire on Willomere Way, just before 5 a.m.

The flames were already out by the time the fire department arrived and firefighters confirmed the residents had left the home so no one was hurt.

The fire, which broke out when the occupants were asleep, was discovered when one resident was awakened by the sound of a window cracking and saw a fire in his backyard. The resident quickly woke up the rest of the family, including two children, and the family of six left the house. They then called the fire department.

The occupants extinguished most of the fire using their garden hose before firefighters arrived.

There was minimal damage from the fire, which was limited to the back of the house.

Possession of child pornography

A 35-year-old Cochrane man was arrested for possession of child pornography and accessing child pornography, April 28.

The name of the man is not being released to protect the identities of the children involved. The RCMP appreciate the citizen’s assistance in the matter and encourage the public to continue bringing similar concerns forward.
