RCMP is investigating an incident on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation on Dec. 16 in which a 28-year-old resident was fatally injured during an altercation with another man.

Jay Rollinmud, 23, of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation has subsequently been charged with manslaughter.

RCMP alleges the victim and Rollinmud were celebrating earlier in the evening when they had a disagreement, which escalated into a physical altercation.

RCMP and EMS were called to the residence at approximately 3 a.m., according to K Division Media Spokesperson Corporal Sharon Franks. The victim was transported via STARS Air Ambulance to a hospital in Calgary where he later succumbed to his injuries.

RCMP Major Crimes charged Rollinmud with manslaughter on Dec. 17. An autopsy was conducted on Dec. 17. Franks said the results of the medical examiner will not be released as this information is part of evidence that goes to court.

Rollinmud is currently in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre. He appeared in Cochrane Provincial Court on Dec. 22, however, the outcome was not known at press time.

The name of the victim is not being released, according to Franks.

“RCMP has to comply with a couple of things. Number one, it has to be in the public interest or number two, it has to enhance the investigation in order for us to release the victim’s name,” she said. “These things don’t apply in this particular case because someone’s been charged.”

Motor Vehicle Collision

EMS was called to the scene of a two-vehicle collision west of Chestermere on Highway 1A and Range Road 284 at 11:10 a.m. on Dec. 18, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

The collision, involving a semi-truck and a sedan, resulted in two people being taken to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Loria said.

The driver of the semi-truck, a man in his 30s, was transported in stable, non life-threatening condition. A woman in her 40s required extrication from the sedan, which was significantly damaged in the collision. She was transported by paramedics in stable, non life-threatening condition with a significant leg injury.

Icy road conditions may have contributed to the collision, which remains under investigation, according to Acting Sergeant Mark Wielgosz of the Chestermere RCMP.

“It was a head on collision between a sedan and, I believe, a dump truck. As a result, the roadway was blocked for a short period of time just based on the response by fire, police and tow trucks in order to clear the roadway,” he said.

“During the period of time, there were somewhat inclement weather conditions at play. It had been snowing, the roads were in the midst of being cleared, it was a little bit icy. The sedan crossed the centre line and a head on collision occurred.”

Wielgosz said the investigation is continuing and RCMP is determining what, if any, charges will be laid.

Recovered Cell Phone

A cell phone originally stolen from the Big Hill Leisure Pool in Cochrane along with a vehicle and credit cards may hold the key to the thief’s identity, according to Cochrane RCMP Sergeant Darleen White.

The cell phone, recovered in Calgary, contains photos the suspect took of himself.

“We released the photos to identify the suspect,” White said. “The vehicle was recovered in town. We believe the suspect took it to Calgary and drove it back to (Cochrane).”

The suspect, who is alleged to have entered the Big Hill Leisure Pool between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 25, went into the locker area and stole car keys and credit cards from one of the lockers.

He then stole a vehicle from the parking lot using the stolen keys and drove into Calgary where he went to the Crowfoot Calgary Co-op store and used one of the credit cards to make two separate purchases.

Stolen Truck

A work truck stolen from the Wildcat Hills Gas Plant west of Cochrane also contained a number of tools, according to White. The truck was stolen from the site at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Dec. 2. Video surveillance footage supplied to RCMP by the business pinpoints the time of the theft.

“The truck has not been recovered yet,” White said. “There was quite a bit of equipment inside.”

The truck is a white 2015 Chevrolet Silverado with Alberta license plate BMW 7913.

Anyone who spots the truck unoccupied is asked to call local RCMP. If the truck is occupied, do not approach and call 911.
