The lone occupant of a truck involved in a single-vehicle collision on May 14 was pronounced dead at the scene, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

“ Yesterday evening at about 11:45, paramedics from Airdrie responded to a field adjacent to Highway 566 and Range Road 284,” Loria said on May 15.

“ There they found quite an extensively damaged pickup truck. An adult male was determined deceased when we arrived, just given the injuries he sustained.”

Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis said the man suffered a medical emergency while driving.

“ It was originally dispatched as a single-vehicle collision with fatality,” he said. “ When members arrived on scene there were no other vehicles involved, no passengers and it did appear that the male driver had had a medical emergency while driving.”

“ The individual lost consciousness and the vehicle continued travelling a distance before going off the road and colliding with some hay bales.”

The identity of the man is not being released pending notification of next of kin, according to Curtis.

The same man is suspected to have attempted to rob two Airdrie jewelry stores on May 6, according to Curtis.

“ A suspect entered a jewelry store on Main Street (identified by RCMP as Goldworks Jewellers) and brandished a firearm,” he said. “ Staff there actually hit the panic alarm which scared the suspect and he ran off.”

According to Curtis, 15 minutes later, the suspect attempted to get into a jewelry store on the east side of Airdrie where customers are required to be buzzed in.

“ The store owner wouldn't buzz (the suspect) in and he ran off,” Curtis said. “ Police Dog Services, Airdrie City RCMP, Airdrie Rural RCMP and Crime Reduction Unit members were out attempting to track that individual.”

The suspect was not located, according to Curtis. The name of the jewelry store on the east side is not being released at the request of the owner.

RCMP describe the man as Caucasian, in his 30s. He was wearing black pants, a dark hoody, black ballcap, white sunglasses and white gloves.

The homeowner of a residence in Windsong awoke on May 11 to find his garage had been broken into and some items stolen, according to Curtis.

“ He damaged the garage door with a tool, got inside, rummaged through the vehicle and then managed to make off with a couple of small hand tools,” Curtis said.

Information obtained from the homeowner's video surveillance was able to give RCMP a time for the break-in of 5:15 a.m. He reported the crime to RCMP upon discovering the damage.

Curtis said video surveillance systems are becoming more popular among homeowners.

“ Unfortunately, property crimes here in the city are a very common occurrence and many members of the public are taking it upon themselves to get video surveillance,” Curtis said. “ It's an excellent investigational aide (for police) if people have that available.”

RCMP describe the man as Caucasian, in his early 20s, with light brown hair and a stocky or heavy build. He was wearing a white or light grey jacket and a brown hat.

If you have any information on any crime, call the Airdrie RCMP detachment at (403) 945-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
