Gavin Bearhead, 30, of Morley has been charged with manslaughter after Cochrane RCMP was called to the Stoney Nakoda First Nation Jan. 22 at approximately 5:25 a.m. to reports of a man in distress at a residence.

Upon arrival, RCMP along with Cochrane EMS pronounced one man dead on scene. He has been identified as Wilfred Junior Amos, 28, of Morley, according to RCMP Media Relation Spokesperson Corporal Shannon Franks.

“They were originally dispatched to a man who was reportedly found in distress. Upon arrival, EMS was actually able to determine that the male was already deceased prior to our arrival,” she said. “At that point, we became involved in the investigation.”

The Calgary Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Jan. 25 that determined Amos’ death was the result of a homicide, according to Franks.

“The RCMP has arrested Gavin Bearhead and charged him with one count of manslaughter in relation to this event,” she said.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit – South (MCU) is conducting the investigation with the assistance of the RCMP Forensic Investigation Section (FIS) and the Cochrane RCMP Detachment.

Another man at the residence was arrested on charges unrelated to the homicide. He has since been released from custody. Franks had no information about what charges the man, who has not been identified by RCMP, is facing.

Bearhead is in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre. He will appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on Feb. 2.
