Klayton Pavlic, 20, of Airdrie has been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm after he allegedly caused a single-vehicle collision on eastbound Yankee Valley Boulevard at Ravenswood View, Dec. 14 at approximately 9 p.m.
RCMP Constable Francine Hennelly said the RCMP received a 911 call at approximately 10:30 p.m. A white, 2004 G35 Infiniti being driven by Pavlic was travelling eastbound on Yankee Valley Boulevard when it crossed the centre line and entered the north ditch at an extremely high rate of speed, striking a power pole before rolling.
Neither Pavlic nor his passenger, a 20-year-old from Airdrie, were wearing seatbelts. The passenger was ejected from the vehicle through the sunroof. Both men were transported to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary by EMS with serious, non life-threatening injuries.
Workers from FortisAlberta had to be called to the scene to repair the power pole. One residence in the surrounding neighbourhood was without power for two hours, according to Alana Antonelli, spokesperson for FortisAlberta.
Pavlic will first appear in Airdrie Provincial Court in February 2016.
Troublesome Intersection
A 71-year-old woman from Airdrie attempting to stop at a red light on eastbound Yankee Valley Boulevard encountered icy roads and slid into the intersection, colliding with a southbound vehicle on Sierra Springs Drive, which in turn slid into the vehicle in front of it.
RCMP continue to investigate, however, Hennelly said motorists are reminded to slow down and drive with caution in icy conditions.
Spike Belt Deployed
Airdrie RCMP deployed a spike belt on northbound Highway 2 south of Veteran’s boulevard Dec. 19 after being notified by Calgary Police Services (CPS) at 8:45 a.m. that a stolen vehicle was heading towards Airdrie.
The vehicle continued on despite the tires being deflated by the spike belt. RCMP deployed a second spike belt, which caused the vehicle to drive into a ditch where it finally came to rest. The driver then surrendered to RCMP and CPS members.
CPS advised that the vehicle had been stolen during a break and enter in Calgary and had been involved with a number of collisions with other vehicles.
The suspect, whose name has not been released by RCMP, is in custody in Calgary. CPS is leading the investigation.
School Theft
Airdrie RCMP is looking to the public for help identifying a man wanted in connection with thefts from two vehicles parked at Muriel Clayton Middle School on Dec. 11.
According to Hennelly, the vehicle’s windows were smashed and “personal items stolen from within, including a purse, tap debit card, movie passes and an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency.”
RCMP was notified of the thefts at approximately 7:40 p.m., according to Hennelly.
The stolen debit card was used later that evening at three local retailers to purchase cigarettes and groceries.
The suspect was caught on video surveillance and is described by RCMP as an “older, fair-skinned individual, wearing a dark brown jacket with a lighter brown inner jacket and camouflage cap.”
