CrossIron Mills mall security officer, Khalid Shahid received a Detachment Commanderís Certificate of Appreciation for his role in rescuing a woman who was abducted and assaulted by her ex-boyfriend on March 28.
The presentation took place April 30 at 11 a.m. in the mallís food court near the Concord Security office with Lieutenant Tony Hamori, officer in charge of Airdrie RCMP Detachment, making the presentation.
ìMr. Shahidís quick thinking and actions were instrumental in assuring the safety of the victim as well as assisting the officers with the arrest of the suspect,î stated an RCMP press release.
After receiving a note passed from the woman to a good Samaritan, Shahid called the police, found the victim and suspect and secured their location.
On duty, plain clothes RCMP members were nearby when the call was received and responded immediately to the mallís security office. Upon their arrival, one of the officers spoke to the victim and identified herself as an officer. The suspect immediately became angry and assaulted the victim in front of the police officers. He also resisted arrest when officers tried to arrest him, actively fighting with police.
ìThe assistance of the public is always an asset when policing a community and Mr. Shahidís assistance in this investigation was greatly appreciated,î stated the release.
The suspect, an Innisfail man that canít be named, has been charged with 15 counts including break and enter with intent, forcible confinement, choking to overcome resistance, assault, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and other offences.
Chestermere ecstasy trafficking bust
Three suspects were arrested after being investigated for ecstasy trafficking, during the late afternoon of April 19.
Chestermere RCMP, with assistance from the Calgary Police Service Drug Section and the Calgary Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, made the arrests.
The investigation began on April 15 after police heard complaints of a Calgary youth who required short-term hospitalization after consuming a form of ecstasy purchased from a youth in Chestermere.
Police identified the Chestermere youth, who was arrested after a brief investigation along with another Chestermere youth and an adult. Charges are pending against two of the three suspects for possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled drug.
Calgary Police Serviceís assistance was crucial to the successful investigation and provides another example of police cooperation, according to a document released by the RCMP.
Chestermere RCMP considers the trafficking of MDMA, also known as ecstasy, a serious problem and caution anyone from using these illegal drugs.
Cochrane assault
Cochrane RCMP is looking for witnesses or information on an assault that took place Feb. 19 outside of the townís McDonaldís location.
A male was assaulted at around 8 p.m. as he was getting into his vehicle outside of the restaurant. He sustained head injuries and a possible concussion.

Cocaine, weapons seized
Calgary RCMP Traffic Services East stopped a vehicle travelling eastbound on Highway 1 at 174 km/h.
The lone occupant, Trevor Weber, was found to have outstanding warrants stemming from Olds RCMP for break and enter. RCMP also found and seized brass knuckles, two pairs of Taser brass knuckles, 64.5 grams of cocaine, five cell phones and other drug-related paraphernalia.
Weber, 37, was charged for possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a prohibited weapon.
