The Zloty family had what can best be described as a bad week recently when they first had a grease fire in the kitchen of their Langdon home and then the home was broken into.

“We had had a fire (on Oct. 22) and everything was smoked out so we had to take my daughter out of there and then we were hit on Saturday (Oct. 24),” Heather Zloty said.

Zloty’s four-year-old daughter, Olivia, suffers from pulmonary hypertension, a lung disease, which meant the family can’t stay in their home until the fire damage is repaired. (See story on page 13.)

The family is now staying with Zloty’s parents in Priddis.

“That was the one day we didn’t go back to check on (our home),” Zloty said. “It looks like (the thieves) got in through the sliding door at the back.”

A number of items were stolen, including jewelry, a compound hunting bow, tools, and most disturbing to Zloty, money that a neighbour had raised for Olivia’s ongoing care.

“It was only $200 but they had dug though a brown paper bag (to find it),” she said. “They knew where to find it. My suspicion is that they had been in our house before. RCMP thinks it’s weird that somebody knew the layout of our house and they knew where they were looking for (the money).”

Corporal Chris Hrynyk of the Strathmore RCMP confirmed the detachment received a call about the break and enter at approximately 1 p.m. on Oct. 24. The crime remains under investigation.

The pair of events happening so close together has Zloty “ready for it to be November. Our luck has to change soon. Hopefully this is it.”
