Irricana’s newest councillor, Peter Dunn is hoping to extend his 10-month term on council for another four years.

Dunn announced he will be running for re-election in the Oct. 21 municipal election, and it’s clear when you speak with him, the town is very important to him.

“Basically, I really enjoy living in Irricana and I just want it to develop and grow,” he said.

Dunn moved to Irricana in 2005 and has considered it home ever since.

“I just really like the town and would like to put some effort into improvements,” he said.

Dunn admits there are issues facing the troubled governance of the municipality, but said he sees a light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve never gotten involved in the local issues, some people don’t like other people,” he said. “I’ve always looked positively at the town and I’ve met some really nice people (in my time).”

The town has overcome some trying times in the past year with one former councillor charged with the trafficking of cocaine and ultimately resigning from his position, two other councillors resigned citing personal reasons, Municipal Affairs stepped in to regulate operations within the Town after residents signed a petition and the municipality delayed $90,000 in payments to the Aqua 7 Commission after it was determined the money was spent.

“I’m hoping to help build a positive image for our Town,” he said. “It just seems to be an undercurrent of negativity.”

Along with changing the current path for Irricana, Dunn would like to see development increase along with the number of businesses in the town downtown core and said he will achieve that by listening to the people, he said.

“The town is at a turning point where we either go back 10 years or go forward,” he said. “I’ve also been a proponent of doing the right thing over trying to appease a few, making choice that are best for everyone.”

As for why he should be elected again, Dunn explains that he has “no hidden agenda”

“I just have the best interest in the town in mind,” he said. “I really care about Irricana, I have a clear voice to represent the people. I’m not intimidated nor will I be pushed around. When I believe something is right, I stand up for it, I stand up for the little people.”

Peter Dunn was elected to fill the vacant seat left by former councillor Frank Dusome, on Dec. 3, 2012.

The by-election saw Dunn go up against Irricana businessman Wayne Niblow, edging him out of the position with a mere 10 votes.

Dunn has served as a member of the Advisory Board for the Community Hall.
