The investigation of a house fire rests in the hands of Cochrane RCMP after the blaze was deemed suspicious by fire investigators.
The structure fire, which occurred along River Heights Drive the evening of Nov. 22, was reported by an off-duty police officer who was driving by the empty home in the community of Riversong.
Cochrane Fire Services responded to the scene shortly following the 6:49 p.m. call, as did the fire crew from Springbank. Firefighters managed to contain the fire — the abandoned home remains standing but suffered extensive damage, said Gary Barnett, Cochrane’s deputy fire chief.
“Our investigation determined that arson caused the fire,” Barnett said. “We’ve handed the matter over to the RCMP.”
Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, of the Cochrane detachment, said there were three separate areas in the residence where it appeared a fire was started.
Reports said the fire climbed from the basement stairwell all the way to the home’s attic.
“We are still investigating, but there are several indications pointing towards arson,” said Savinkoff. “Exhibits have been seized from the residence, as well as related evidence that could lead us to potential suspects.”
As of Nov. 26, Savinkoff said RCMP had no suspects in mind.
