Rocky View County council approved $27,358 in funding for the Bragg Creek Community Association (BCCA), Dec. 6.
The money, provided through the Rocky View West Recreation Board, will help the association complete a number of projects at the Bragg Creek Centre, located on White Avenue.
“It is very, very exciting to be able to be moving forward... rather than trying to play catch up,” said Yvonne Smith of the BCCA.
Outdoor projects will include upgrading the new outdoor rink liner, building an outdoor cold storage shed and purchasing tractor attachments to help clear snow off the rink and parking lot. A portable building will also be constructed for a concession stand.
Indoors, the facility will get an energy-efficient industrial freezer to help save on maintenance and utility costs.
According to Smith, the upgrades are needed as very little capital has gone into improving the community centre, which hosts hockey, dance, fitness classes, basketball, skating and floor hockey programs.
“The building itself has some sort of program running in it on a daily basis,” said Smith. “It is very, very busy and that is something we are really excited about.”
Division 1 Councillor Rick Butler is pleased the money will go to the not-for-profit society that serves a large portion of his constituents.
“The Bragg Creek Centre is a valuable recreational facility and a central venue for many community events,” said Butler. “The County is supportive of improving recreational facilities to ensure area residents have the tools to build strong community relationships.”
The Rocky View West Recreation Board supported the request and formally asked council to consider the approval of capital funding to the Bragg Creek Community Association.
