A City of Airdrie InterCity Express (ICE) bus was involved in a collision at the intersection of Centre Street and McKnight Boulevard in northeast Calgary.
There were 67 passengers onboard at the time of the collision and one was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision. The status of the injured passenger was unknown as of press time.
During rush-hour traffic at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 10, the bus was ìmoving slowly and was involved in an accident,î according to a press release from the City of Airdrie. Officials with the City did not know the cause or fault of the accident
According to the Calgary Police Service (CPS) ñ whose officers attended the scene ñ the crash involved three vehicles.
ìThere was little damage to the bus and it is currently (Sept. 11) with maintenance to assess the damage,î Jill Iverson, communications advisor with the City of Airdrie said. ìWe expect the bus to be back in circulation soon.î
The reason for the accident was under investigation as of press time and no further information was released by either the CPS or the City.
ìOur hearts and minds are with those involved in the accident,î said Michelle Lock, director of community services at the City.
ìOur highest priority is rider safety and we will investigate this incident in conjunction with our contracted service provider.î
Rail delays
A number of Airdrie railway crossings caused traffic delays last week, when the arms of the crossing were down but no train could be seen.
The reason for the delay, according to CP Rail is track maintenance.
ìIf you are not familiar with how grade-crossing warning systems work they are programmed to activate when trains or equipment operating on the rail line are within a certain proximity to the crossing,î said Kevin Hrysak, media relations manager for CP Rail via email.
ìThe specific incidents that you reference appears to have been activated by some nearby track equipment that was doing some rail work in the Airdrie area and would have been the reason that no equipment was noticed crossing.î
According to Hrysak, this is not a common occurrence and he said he ìhas followed up with our employees in the area about working in proximity to grade crossings.î
Hrysak did not provide any more information on the incident.
ìWe regret any inconvenience that this may have caused nearby motorists or pedestrians,î he said.
