An 18-year-old man from Three Hills died after being hit by a truck as a result of a three vehicle collision in a near Beiseker on July 15.

Police investigation confirmed a transport truck was travelling northbound on Highway 21 and failed to stop for a posted stop sign at a controlled intersection and collided with a Honda Civic travelling eastbound on Highway 9.

The two vehicles then collided into a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck parked north of the intersection and subsequently hit two workers doing highway maintenance on Highway 21.

One man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other worker was a 19-year-old woman, also from Three Hills and was air lifted by STARS Air Ambulance in critical condition and remains in intensive care in Calgary.

Both of the road workers were employees of Carillion Canada and were working on a contract for the Government of Alberta.

The lone occupant of the Honda Civic was transported to hospital by ground ambulance and has since been released.

Charges are pending against the driver of the transport truck, a 35-year-old man from Blackfalds. The driver is facing one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

The names of the two people who were injured will not be released and the name of the 35-year-old transport truck driver is being withheld as his charges are pending.

Police would like to remind the public to remain diligent when travelling on all highways by following all the rules of the road and paying close attention when approaching any intersection, whether it is controlled by a traffic device or not.

“We urge people to be mindful of intersections and other drivers around them,” said Airdrie RCMP Cst. Jennifer Morin. “Don’t drive when you’re tired and make sure to be aware of construction zones and speed limits.”

The RCMP are still seeking assistance from possible witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Airdrie RCMP at 403-945-7200 or Beiseker RCMP at 403-947-3240.
