A man in his mid-20s remains in serious but stable condition at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary after he was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 22 south of Highway 1, which completely shut down the highway for six hours on May 19, according to Cochrane RCMP Sergeant Darleen White.

“A pumper truck and a pickup truck were both going south on Highway 22. The pickup truck had pulled over on the shoulder and then did a U-turn in front of the pumper truck,” White said. “He got T-boned on the driver's side.”

Both lanes of the highway were closed from the time of the collision at approximately 3 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The driver of the pick-up was transported by Cochrane EMS to Foothills, according to EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux.

“We dispatched a unit from Cochrane at around 3:20 p.m. on the 19th,” Brideaux said. “The driver of the pickup was actually able to get out of the vehicle on his own power, which is where EMS found him, on the side of the road when we arrived.”

According to White, investigators have not yet been able to speak with the driver of the pickup truck who is from Millet, because he is still in hospital.

“He is stable. I just spoke to the mom today,” she said May 21.

The driver of the pumper truck, from Okotoks, was not injured in the collision, according to Brideaux.

A dog riding in the pickup truck was taken from the scene by MD Rockyview Bylaw Services, according to Brideaux, and transported to a Cochrane veterinarian's office.

“I believe the dog is still at the vet's,” White said. “He did suffer some injuries but I'm not sure to what extent.”

The cause of the accident is still being investigated, according to White.

“There is indications alcohol may have been a factor,” she said.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision, according to White. Highway 22 is one lane in both directions at the point where the collision occurred.

Airdrie Rural RCMP is hoping a composite sketch will help them find a man alleged to be responsible for breaking into a residence on Symons Valley Road in Rocky View County (RVC) on May 18 in an attempt to steal jewelry, according to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis.

A relative of the homeowner was visiting the residence and arrived to find the door damaged and a man inside one of the bedrooms, Curtis said in a May 20 release.

The man fled in a green, older model Dodge pickup truck with a silver strip along the bottom of each side.

The relative of the homeowner was able to provide an RCMP sketch artist with a description of the suspect and a composite drawing was created. Video surveillance from the scene was also turned over to investigators, according to Curtis. No one was injured during the incident.

RCMP describe the man as Caucasian, heavy set, 5'6” tall with blond hair.
