Bert Church High School hosted the Alberta Schools Athletic Association’s (ASAA) 2012 South Central Zones badminton tournament, April 24.
Chestermere students took home three medals in the singles category with Adeline Le winning the senior girls’ bronze and Shamus Moore and Bryan Tran taking home silver and bronze respectively.
Cochrane’s Jenny and Shannon Denison won the junior girls’ doubles silver medal and Connor Denison and Erik Spooner also won silver in intermediate boys’ doubles.
Shannon Cameron and Colton Smith, both from George McDougall High School, won silver and bronze, respectively, in the junior boys’ singles category while Bert Church’s Ryan Chernuska and Keaton Roe won bronze in junior boys’ doubles.
RVSA athletes chosen for Senior Bowl
Six Rocky View high school football players will play in Football Alberta’s 23rd Annual Senior Bowl High School Football All-Star Game. Aaron Elock-Coyle, of St. Timothy’s High School, Kellen Forrest, Kristian Root, Eric Patterson, Dustin Bennett, all of Cochrane, and Springbank’s Jordan Perreault have been chosen to represent Team South at the game, which will take place May 21 in Edmonton.
Wrestling club finds success
Three members of the Cochrane Cowboys Wrestling Club recently returned from the 2012 Cadet National Wrestling Championships, which were held in Fredericton, N.B. All three wrestlers finished in the top six of their respective categories. Callum McNeice placed fifth in the Cadet Boys 42 kilogram category and Aiden McKeage placed sixth in the Cadet Boys 58 kilogram category. Katie-May Stockley finished sixth in the Cadet Girls 60 kilogram category.
Airdrie–Strathmore Minor Hockey
It was reported in the Strathmore Standard that Strathmore Minor Hockey is considering joining forces with minor hockey leagues in Airdrie and Okotoks to create a less competitive house league in order to reduce travel and cost.
Greg Wing, general manager of the Airdrie Minor Hockey Association, said in an email that while the association has met once with Strathmore Minor Hockey, “it was an informal meeting and we did not commit to any program changes.”
