Funding approved for recreation projects throughout RVC

Rocky View County (RVC) council unanimously approved $106,000 from the Bearspaw Glendale Recreation Board’s public reserve on April 28 to fund life cycle replacement costs for the Bearspaw Glendale Community Association.

Rocky View County (RVC) council unanimously approved $106,000 from the Bearspaw Glendale Recreation Board’s public reserve on April 28 to fund life cycle replacement costs for the Bearspaw Glendale Community Association. With matching funding to be provided from the Province, the Bearspaw Lifestyle Centre will see upgraded exterior siding, gym floor, interior painting, 250 banquet chairs, energy efficient gym lighting, facility flooring, facility countertop replacements, basketball backboards, and lockers.

Funding was approved for a number of other projects from the Rocky View West section of the public reserve. Council unanimously voted to provide $50,000 for construction costs for Phase 2 of the West Bragg Creek Trail, $30,000 for a project to renovate the east side (main entrance, restrooms, storage areas, and kitchen) of the Jumping Pound Community Hall, $28,250 to help fund the Bragg Creek Community Association’s request to connect to the municipal water and sewer system, and a Capital Assistance Grant of $21,810 for electronic curtains and wall modifications for the Bragg Creek Community Association, to increase programs and rental revenue.

The total cost of the four requested funding projects is $130,060, which is offered on a minimum of 50 per cent cost-sharing basis. As of Feb. 28, the Rocky View West Recreation Board held approximately $260,730 in its uncommitted capital public reserve account.

From Rocky View School’s section of the public reserve, funding of $15,000 was approved to assist with the sport court project at Westbrook School, matching the $15,000 in funding from the Ranch Lands Recreation Board’s section of the public reserve that was approved in May 2013.

“There should have been a second motion for matching funding from Rocky View Schools, but unfortunately, that motion was missed,” said Dari Lang, Recreation and Community Support with RVC. “This error was not brought to our attention until we received correspondence from Rocky View Schools requesting funding for that project.”

Funding of $49,000 was unanimously approved from the Chestermere-Conrich Recreation Board’s public reserve to assist the Chestermere Lions Club with upgrades to the ball diamonds in the City of Chestermere. Although the ball diamonds are owned by the City, Rocky View Schools has committed to sharing annual maintenance to allow access for students, as the ball diamonds are immediately adjacent the East Lake School.

From Rocky View Central Recreation Board’s public reserve, council approved funding in the amount of $23,500 to assist the Golden Rod Community Association with water drainage improvements and an upgraded parking area.
