Angela Pitt isn’t a stranger to many Airdronians – the 29-year-old mom has become a familiar face around the city, as her company has been behind promoting and organizing various recent events.

The born-and-raised Airdronian announced her latest venture in a YouTube video on May 16 – she will be running in the City’s municipal election in October.

“It just made sense,” said Pitt. “The more I got involved in events in the community, the more I fell in love with it.”

Pitt’s company, Airdrie Events, was behind the Airdrie Family Fall Fair, Carter’s Quest New Year’s Eve Gala and the Airdrie Wedding Event. The company’s next event, the Airdrie Beer, Wine and Spirits Festival is slated for June 21 at the Town and Country Centre.

Pitt said the decision to run for council seemed a natural fit.

“A lot of people were bugging me last year that I should run for council,” Pitt said.

“I’ve thought about it for quite a while.”

Pitt said she would bring her specific voice – that of an event planner but also as a mother – to council.

She said her voice, one that represents the concerns of families in Airdrie who are not seeing their needs met, is one that council is missing. Raising her two- and four–year-old children in the community made her aware of problems she feels she could fix.

“Airdrie needs to give us our backyards back,” she said.

“The way we’re building our neighbourhoods should be a concern.”

Pitt said council should work with developers to ensure communities include bigger lots and that less houses are packed into small areas.

She said she would also like to see more green space near schools and a different approach and focus on 24-hour healthcare in the city.

“It’s important to help (in the community),” Pitt said. “I don’t like to stand on the sidelines and complain about things – I want to get my hands in there.”

The election will take place in Airdrie on Oct. 21.
