Airdrie’s East Lake Athletic Park will officially take on a new moniker on July 1 during the City of Airdrie’s annual Canada Day dedication ceremony.
City council voted unanimously to change the name to the Ed Eggerer Athletic Park on Feb. 3 to honour the deceased community advocate.
Eggerer moved to Airdrie in 1980 and became president and co-owner of Century 21 Castlewood Agencies, with partners Milt Brandson and Keith Wilson.
After selling the business in 1997, he was active as an agent/associate with Century 21 PowerRealty.ca
He was a founding member of the George McDougall High School Save Our School (S.O.S.) Society that raised funds for the development of high school sports.
He was honoured posthumously in 2013 with the Airdrie Ambassador Award and received numerous other awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award in 2012.
Eggerer died suddenly on March 17, 2013, he is survived by his wife Sylvia and his family Devon and Jim Sawby, Jonna Eggerer and Andy McQuade, and his grandchildren Carter and Davis Sawby.
“Ed was always very involved and dedicated to athletics in the community,” said Alderman Allan Hunter.
“With the Summer Games coming to Airdrie this year, I can’t think of a better person to name our athletic park after.”
The dedication ceremony will get underway after sunset at 10:15 p.m. and residents are encouraged to attend.
“Ed’s park is our way of saying thank you for helping build a stronger, more caring community for all of us,” said Mayor Peter Brown.
Urgent Care access
The Airdrie Canada Day parade will take place on July 1 from 10 a.m. until noon, and the Urgent Care Centre at 604 Main St. will remain open throughout the parade.
Access points have been changed to accommodate the parade and there will be two manned access points where patients will be assessed and/or escorted to the Urgent Care Centre.
The curb lane closest to the centre between First Avenue north and Allen Street will be blocked off to ensure access to the centre.
Residents are asked to keep this lane accessible at all times and not to use the Urgent Care Centre parking lot for parade parking.
This access area will be in effect from 9 a.m. until half an hour after the conclusion of the parade.
