CrossIron Mills mall officially opened its brand new food hall July 27 with a ceremony that featured Italian dancing and speeches from developers.

“We’re very pleased to further enhance CrossIron Mills, as… part of the Rocky View Community,” said Ivanhoé Cambridge Senior Vice President John Scott.

“It’s a place where everyone comes together to shop, live and play.”

Guests lined up to receive $10 food vouchers for use at any of the food hall’s 24 restaurants including three new eateries: Chachi’s, Big Smoke Burger and Popbar.

A new entrance on the north side of the mall leads visitors into the 1,400-seat food hall enclosed by a curved metal roof, 40-foot high glass vestibule and numerous skylights.

CrossIron Mills General Manager James Moller announced a month-long contest called Eat Your Way to Italy. As part of the contest, every customer who makes a purchase in the new food hall until Aug. 21 will receive a promo code allowing them to enter for a chance to win a 10-day trip to Italy worth $15,000.

“To enjoy a truly Italian culinary experience,” Moller said.

Located in Rocky View County near Balzac and 1.5 kilometres north of Calgary, CrossIron Mills mall is the only “true” outlet shopping centre in Western Canada.

The food hall is an considerable addition to the nearly seven-year-old mall that sees approximately nine million visitors a year and holds the title of the biggest single-level shopping centre in the province.

“Opening this fabulous space…is the first phase of the project and not only does this add a stronger food and beverage offering for our customers, it was a strategic decision to provide opportunity to further expand CrossIron Mills,” Scott said.

Moving the mall’s food court will allow for the second phase of a $60-million redevelopment project to move forward. The food court’s relocation will create 46,000 square feet of retail space coming in spring 2017.

A Shoppers Drug Mart across from the food hall opened on the Heritage Day long weekend and a 30,000 square foot Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th is projected to open in September.

Rocky View County Reeve Greg Boehlke expressed gratitude to developers Ivanhoé Cambridge for developing in the county.

“A few years ago Ivanhoé Cambridge came to this community and saw an opportunity,” he said. “They looked at the location and had the courage and commitment to move forward with it.”
