Members of the Crossfield Fire Department will be suited up head-to-toe in brand new turnout gear, thanks to a grant from CrossAlta Gas Storage and Services.

The $27,000 cheque was presented to the members of Station 54, May 28.

Fire Chief Ben Niven said the money will be spent on 10 sets of new gear.

“It enabled us to buy new turnout gear for our staff,” he said. “It wasn’t something we had budgeted for, so the donation was awesome. It was a great thing to receive to assist us to purchase the gear.

“(The equipment) is very important, it’s what protects us. We’ve outfitted (our firefighters) from head-to-toe, everything from the helmets to the boots are brand new.”

The Crossfield Fire Department consists of 35 members and 33 are volunteer firefighters. Station 54 is busy, as it serves 550 square kilometres of the county of Rocky View including incidents along Highway 2, and they also have agreements with the City of Airdrie.

“We assist in Airdrie when they require help, and we assist the County in any function that they need us in, whether it’s water supply or fire suppression, even outside of our coverage district,” Niven said.

“We work really well with our partners in the county and continue to flourish that relationship.”

Niven said the donation means a lot to everyone at the station, and they can’t say enough about the support of local organizations.

“We would like to give a great big heartfelt thank you… from the Crossfield Fire Department,” he said. “Thank you for thinking of us and supporting us in that purchase.

“It will definitely go to good use in protecting our firefighters while they are out assisting others in their time of need.”
