Richards announced $20,000 of funding on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, minister of state for western economic diversification, to go towards heating upgrades at the community centre.

During a brief appearance at the Crossfield and District Community Centre, Feb. 19, Wild Rose MP Blake Richards announced a $21,000 grant to go towards upgrades to the centre’s heating system.

“The community infrastructure improvement fund improves community facilities like this one that enhances the life of the community,” said Richards to Crossfield councillors, Rocky View County Councillor Greg Boehlke, a few town employees and media representatives just after 6 p.m. in the lobby of the building.

“This money is mainly for the heating system, which will ultimately extend the life of the facility so the residents of the community can continue to enjoy this for years to come,” he said.

Crossfield Councillor Gary Richardson said construction should begin this spring with the completion set for the fall.

“This will reduce our environmental footprint and cost of heating,” he said, explaining seven new furnaces will be replaced by one new, efficient one. He said four other furnaces are also being replaced.

“Without the provincial and Government of Canada, we would be patching, not fixing,” he said.

The new furnaces are expected to last for 20 years. The overall project will costs about $80,000 with the remaining money coming from other grants.

The community centre is financed by volunteers of the Crossfield and District Recreation Area, donations and government grants. It operates under the direction of a volunteer board organized under the Societies Act.
