At least two cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at Cooper's Crossing School in Airdrie, according to Alberta Health Services (AHS).
According to an Oct. 2 press release from AHS, the medical health officer has declared an outbreak at the school as a result of the positive cases.
“Public health staff are investigating to determine who may have been exposed at your school to cases of COVID-19 during their infectious period,” the release said. “The virus is passed from person to person by large, respiratory droplets, like from a cough or sneeze. This means that a person would need to have direct contact with droplets from a sick person or surfaces they have recently touched.”
The risk of the school's general population becoming infected remains low, according to the release.
According to a post on Cooper's Crossing School's website, the school is working closely with AHS to ensure the necessary precautions are taken to protect students and staff. For privacy reasons, the school will not be sharing more information about the individuals who tested positive.
The will remain open for in-class learning, and a deep clean of the school will be completed again before students return to class on Monday.
“Our thoughts are with all individuals impacted by this positive case,” the post said. “We wish anyone impacted a quick recovery and look forward to their return to school when they are well, and it is safe. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
