Rocky View County will host a free workshop to teach residents about well water safety on Nov. 26 in Bragg Creek.

On Nov. 26, Rocky View County in partnership with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD), will present a free well maintenance seminar at the Bragg Creek Snowbirds Senior Citizen Center.

The day-long Working Well Workshop is hosted by the County and sponsored by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resources and their collaborators.

“The workshop encourages an open dialog from residents who may have concerns about ground and well water safety,” said ESRD spokeswoman Ogho Ikhalo.

She said the workshop will give participants a basic understanding of how ground and well water works and how to properly maintain and service a water well.

Working Well is part of ESRD’s Partners in Resource Excellence program, which aims to improve environmental practices throughout the province beyond regulatory requirements.

Ikhalo said the workshops were developed after residents voiced concerns about the safety of groundwater supplies during other ESRD informational sessions in 2006.

Working Well offers province-wide, hands-on workshops free of charge to well-owners in areas of: basics of groundwater, well construction, contamination risks, importance of well reclamation, how to best select a location for a water well, water sampling and best management practices.

Ikhalo said the workshops help to ensure a safe and secure water supply in Alberta.

Kendra Tippe, agricultural services officer with the County, said there are a lot of residents in the county using water wells.

“Understanding how water wells work is extremely important to protecting our ground water supply,” she said.

She said the workshop will provide residents with a lot of educational information and hopes participants will take away a better understanding of how water wells work.

Interested participants are asked to preregister before Nov. 19, by calling 403-520-6291. Registration is free and includes a light supper.
