Canadian National Railway’s proposed 680-acre logistics park is on track.
Rocky View Council voted unanimously in favour of granting first reading to a CN-requested road closure, market evaluation and purchase agreement, Feb. 1.
“It is flattering to see large companies, such as CN, considering Rocky View as a good place to do business,” said Reeve Rolly Ashdown. “Obviously it (the logistics park) would be a good asset to Rocky View County, as it would add to our tax base and give us further diversification.”
Range Road 283, which is undeveloped, is located north of Conrich and its closure is a preliminary step to CN’s proposed facility.
The project falls within the Calgary-Chestermere Corridor Area Structure Plan, and the County’s planning department is working to ensure the proposed facility is a good fit for the area.
The road closure is being conducted before any other approvals because of the time it may take to receive approval from the Alberta Minister of Transportation, to whom council is forwarding the new bylaw.
According to Ashdown, several steps are necessary before the train facility is built, including, federal and provincial approval, as well as the County’s own public hearing and approval processes.
“There are several layers of government that have to be consulted and must approve the project,” said Ashdown.
“What you are seeing is just the start of something.”
