Councillors appointed to boards

Irricana council reshuffled which councillors sit on the Town’s boards and committees, Jan. 21.

The move was made because of the two new residents who joined council in the last two months.

The committee appointments proved to be a somewhat tricky undertaking as councillors Peter Dunn and Wayne Niblow both work during the day and are not always able to attend daytime meetings.

Mayor Lisa Constantini, who also works during the day, said she is maxed out on day meetings and could not take on anymore.

The result was a comprehensive reshuffling of seats on the boards and committees.

“I think we moved it around and balanced it pretty well,” Deputy Mayor Larry Martin said.

Councillor Josh Taylor said the new councillors have some very good committees with meetings that just happen to fall on evenings.

“In general, I’m quite happy with the way the committees are,” Taylor said.

Constantini will remain on the Assessment Review Board, the Community Services Board and the Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP) Geographic Information Systems committee. She will sit with Martin on the Irricana and District Library Board, the CRP Executive Committee and the Canadian Badlands Ltd. committee and will join Taylor on the Municipal Planning Commission and Subdivision Approval Committee (MPC).

Martin, who has a seat on more boards and committees than any other councillor, will also sit on the Aqua 7 board, the Rocky View East Recreation Board, the CRP Servicing Committee and the Community Futures Wild Rose committee.

Martin says he is happy with his commitments because some of the more high-profile committees that require more time have been reassigned to other councillors. Although he has more seats than other councillors, he says the weight of the committees is well balanced among them.

“I just got involved with the Library Board recently and I’m excited to see where that one is going,” Martin said.

In addition to MPC, Taylor will sit on two CRP boards including the Regional Transportation committee and the Economic Partnership Forum.

“I think CRP Regional Transportation is one I’m really interested in but I don’t know how long it will be before it affects Irricana,” Taylor said.

Dunn will take on the Community Hall Advisory committee and the Rocky View Foundation. He will be on the Emergency Management Agency committee with Niblow.

Niblow will also sit on the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board and the Economic Development and Tourism Committee.

Niblow said he was excited about the appointments and was very pleased that council worked with his schedule to find committees he could attend.

“I got into this because I want to do my community some good,” he said.

CAO Alvin Melton will provide council with confirmation that no committee commitments overlap on the same day and time for the councillors.
