City council reaffirmed its support by voting to provide financial and in-kind contributions to the 2012 Alberta Culture Days and ARTember events, March 19.

The City will provide $14,270 and $5,730 in non-financial support.

“This is in keeping with our support of the arts in the community,” said Alderman Glenda Alexander.

Linda Bruce, executive director of the Creative Airdrie Society, said she is happy to have the City’s support.

“For years, the City has been involved in developing the arts and culture of the community,” she said. “We are excited about the partnership with the City. It will be another exciting line-up this year.”

ARTember will be held Sept. 14 to 30. Alberta Culture Days will be Sept. 28 to 30.

On March 19, staff provided council with a review of waste and recycling initiatives in 2011 and what programs are on deck for 2012.

In February 2011, the City hosted a Christmas tree chipping event with FortisAlberta and Precision Pruning.

In April, the City launched The Bulb Eater fluorescent lamp crusher from Air Cycle Corp. that crushes fluorescent bulbs of any length as well as compact fluorescent bulbs while removing 99.9 per cent of mercury vapour.

In October, the recycling depot, Airdrie Food Bank and eCycle Solutions Inc. launched the Old Phones = New Hope program, which will benefit local charities. eCycle Solutions Inc. will donate $1 for each phone dropped off at the eastside Recycle Depot. To date, the project has raised $214 for the Airdrie Food Bank.

“In 2012, the department will work with council and the Environmental Advisory Board to identify or re-confirm next steps in Waste and Management Strategy, including a review of curbside organics recycling,” said Susan Grimm, the City’s team leader of waste and recycling services.

The City will support a curbside take-it-or-leave-it program in conjunction with the Community Garage Sale.

“I think the curbside take-it-or-leave-it is a fantastic idea,” said Alexander.
