Airdrie City council discussed options for the Ron Ebbesen Arena’s broken chiller, June 4.

The chiller broke down May 19 due to a burst pipe, making it necessary for user groups to find ice elsewhere.

Council directed staff to investigate a random selection of the remaining 326 tubes with a camera. If the pipes show signs of corrosion, a new chiller will be purchased and installed at an estimated cost of $62,000. The money will come from the 2012 capital budget.

The process would take eight to nine weeks.

If purchased, the new chiller will be under warranty for two years. If the tubes show no signs of damage, council directed staff to have the pipe that burst removed and plugged.

The system will then be recharged.

The process will take between two to three weeks and will cost about $8,000. The money will come from the Arena Operating budget.

Approximately 225 hours of ice time were booked on both sheets of the Ron Ebbesen Arena in June.

About 120 hours of that time have been moved to the Plainsmen Arena.

Staff is now projecting $21,000 in revenue, down from the original expectation of $39,000 from the bookings.
