A 68-year-old man had to be airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary on Dec. 18 after the vehicle he was driving, a Jeep Wrangler, struck a Chevrolet Avalanche as it was attempting to turn north on to Range Road 284 from Highway 567.
According to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria, the man was in serious, potentially life-threatening condition with possible internal injuries, prompting the call to bring STARS to the scene.
The driver of the Avalanche, a 47-year-old woman, was transported by ground ambulance to the Peter Lougheed Centre in stable, non life-threatening condition with minor injuries.
According to Airdrie RCMP Constable Matt Gervais, RCMP received the call at 12:35 p.m. Along with paramedics from Airdrie, members from Airdrie Rural RCMP as well as Rocky View County Fire Services attended the call.
The collision required the closure of Highway 567 in both directions for approximately two hours, according to Gervais. Traffic was diverted to Range Road 285 and Range Road 283.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Road conditions at the time of the incident were extremely icy and RCMP was advising motorists to use caution on area roads, particularly between Airdrie and Crossfield.
