City extends Enhanced Traffic Safety Program

City council unanimously approved the extension of the Enhanced Traffic Safety Program until August 2012.

City council unanimously approved the extension of the Enhanced Traffic Safety Program until August 2012. The program was approved July 2010 by council and officers have since issued 528 tickets, including 150 for speeding, 106 for stop sign violations and 65 for seatbelt infractions.

“The program is very important in keeping with the City’s desire for a safe and healthy community,” said Inspector Tony Hamori.

The request for program extension was well received and supported by council.

“Thanks to this program, the city is getting safer,” said Deputy Mayor Glenda Alexander. “This is a great program, and I’ll support it again and again.”

Council unanimously approved a $90,000 increase to the 2011 Airdrie Fire Department Water Tanker budget in order to accommodate the purchase/construction of a water tanker. The construction of the apparatus will be completed in April 2012. The water tanker is needed to provide service to newly annexed land.

Jody Matsuba-Szucs and Kathy Schulze made a presentation to council about the newly-formed Airdrie Aces Athletics Club. The club was created after Airdrie hosted a local Hershey Track Meet in May.

The meet was attended by 300 kids and eight qualified for the provincial meet, which was held in Edmonton on June 18.

The track club trains three times a week during two separate track seasons. The outdoor season is currently running until July 31 and the indoor season will run from November to March.

“We have a beautiful track and we want to foster that growth and turn out top notch track athletes,” said Matsuba-Szucs.

The club hopes to enter a team into the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games in Fort McMurray.

The Go Girl event received a letter of support from council needed to apply for a $2,500 grant from the InMotion Network, which promotes physical activity for girls and women across the province.

The event is organized by the City of Airdrie, Community Links, the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie and Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Calgary and Area and allows girls to take part in sports like cheerleading, belly dancing, field hockey and yoga.

The grant will be used to maintain the program’s $10 registration fee.
