A young girl was struck by a truck June 28 as she crossed First Avenue at Edwards Way at approximately 2:30 p.m. She suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital by EMS, according to Spokesman Adam Loria.
“I’d consider her injuries serious but not life-threatening,” he said. “She was stable en route to hospital with a number of serious injuries.”
The 11-year-old girl, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding her bike through the marked crosswalk when she was struck, according to RCMP.
The 20-year-old man driving the pickup truck was issued a ticket under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
RCMP does not believe speed and alcohol to be factors in the collision. RCMP did not return requests for comment by press time.
A fatal rollover north of Carstairs on Highway 2 June 29 claimed the life of one man, according to Loria.
“It was a minivan that rolled over. There were four occupants, all of which were transported to hospital,” he said. “One was determined deceased on scene by first arriving paramedic crews.”
Loria was not able to confirm the age of the deceased.
EMS was originally called to the scene at 7 a.m. along with RCMP from Airdrie.
“Of the three transported to hospital, they all went to the Foothills Medical Centre,” Loria said. “They were all male and they were all suffering from a number of injuries, stable but non life-threatening.”
A man in his 30s was transported by STARS Air Ambulance, Loria said, due to the nature of his injuries.
“He could become unstable quicker than the others,” he said. “(There may have been) possible internal injuries that we could not see so we opted for the air (transport) rather than ground for that gentleman.”
Two other men, both in their 20s, were transported by ground ambulance.
Highway 2 was closed in both directions for approximately four hours to allow STARS to land and for emergency crews and RCMP to complete the investigation. Traffic was diverted around the collision onto Highway 2A.
According to RCMP, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the collision and the investigation is on-going.
