Chestermere woman arrested after fatal hit-and-run in Calgary

A Chestermere woman was taken in to police custody following a hit-and-run incident that killed a man in southeast Calgary, early on Oct. 16. Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision that occurred at 2:30 a.m.

A Chestermere woman was taken in to police custody following a hit-and-run incident that killed a man in southeast Calgary, early on Oct. 16.

Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision that occurred at 2:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of 17 Avenue southeast.

The driver of the black SUV was heading eastbound and struck the man as he was walking across the street, according to police.

A 26-year-old man was found dead at the scene.

The driver sped off, but not before witnesses were able to call the police.

Police found the SUV abandoned nearby. Chestermere RCMP were called to take the woman in to custody.

Pair of marijuana busts

Cochrane RCMP made two drug busts in an eight-day span at two Cochrane residences.

On Oct. 11, the Cochrane RCMP General Investigation Unit completed an investigation into possible marijuana trafficking operation on Powell Street in Cochrane.

A search warrant was executed in the evening of Oct. 11 and the resident was arrested.

Officers seized marijuana, mushrooms (Psilocybin), cash and firearms.

Gerald Zane Byatt of Cochrane has been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of trafficking a controlled substance and one count of possession of proceeds of crime.

Byatt will appear in Cochrane court later this month.

On Oct. 3, Cochrane RCMP were called to investigate what was believed to be an marijuana grow operation on Glendale Way in Cochrane.

The homeowner called emergency services after going into medical distress, which resulting in the attending personnel locating several marijuana plants growing on the property.

The investigation concluded that the resident possessed a Health Canada License to produce marijuana, but was growing close to 75 per cent more than his permit allowed.

RCMP obtained a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and seized all of the plants that were grown in excess of the license.

Charges are pending in this investigation.

Break and enter

More than $3,000 of tools were stolen from a storage facility located within the construction compound of a new Rocky View County Fire Department (RVFD) firehall near Bearspaw.

Cochrane RCMP is seeking the assistance of the public in relation to a break and enter and theft that occurred at the compound between 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 and 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 11.

The compound is located at the intersection of Highway 1A and Lochend Road east of Cochrane and is the future site of a new RVFD firehall.

A Seacan storage facility within the compound was forcibly entered and a number of construction tools were removed.

Fatal crash

Cochrane RCMP is asking the public for assistance with gathering information surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Sept. 14.

A 2013 black Dodge Challenger that was reported stolen to Calgary Police was travelling westbound on Burma Road on Sept. 14 when the driver lost control and went off the road and through a number of fences.

The exact speed of the vehicle was not known; the speed limit on Burma Road is 80 km/h.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from Calgary, was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS.

According to police, Dylan Perry had been at Jamesons Irish Pub at 1230 – 17th Ave. SW in Calgary and it is believed that he travelled from 17 Avenue and 14 Street SW, to Burma Road just west of Bearspaw Road in a 2013 Dodge Challenger between the hours of 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.

Anyone with information regarding Perry’s activities between the hours in question, is asked to contact the Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000.

Firearms stolen

Strathmore RCMP is seeking the assistance of the public in relation to a break and enter in which firearms were stolen.

Some time between the dates of Oct. 8 and Oct. 11, a residence located on Range Road 284 in Rocky View County was broken into.

According to police, unknown suspects gained entry to the residence by prying open a locked door. Once inside the residence, the suspects stole a number of firearms.
