On Feb. 6 the Wildrose Party announced a new candidate for the Chestermere-Rocky View constituency.
Rocky View County’s Leela Aheer will seek to be a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the next provincial election, scheduled for 2016.
“Our 2012 Wildrose team worked tirelessly to elect the first Wildrose MLA for the riding,” Aheer said in an email to Rocky View Weekly. “I am looking forward to being a strong voice that tis free to speak for the citizens of Rocky View and to continue our strong Wildrose presence in Edmonton.”
The Wildrose candidate for the constituency was left vacant when former Wildrose MLA Bruce McAllister crossed the floor to join the Progressive Conservatives along with eight other MLAs on Dec. 17, 2014.
“I believe I can represent our constituents under the umbrella of the Wildrose Party that they voted for in 2012,” she said. “My loyalty and integrity are the cornerstones of what brought me to the Wildrose Party in the first place. I intend to follow through on behalf of my constituents as I know we share these common values.”
Aheer runs several successful businesses, organizes and volunteers for a variety of community events and plays in the “nationally released” ensemble Minerva, according to her biography.
She is also a partner of the Chestermere Community Health Centre.
“(The Wildrose) is actively listening at the doors to our constituents regarding a number of important issues such as local health care, property right and the issues surrounding the Springbank dam,” Aheer said.
She said if elected she will not support the introduction of a provincial sales tax.
“The Wildrose has always been opposed to the sales tax and we will continue to remain opposed on behalf of all Albertans.”
