A 21-year old man and 17-year-old woman from Calgary, were arrested on Feb. 12 in Chestermere after they attempted to flee from Chestermere RCMP and Calgary Police (CPS) in a stolen truck.

CPS informed Chestermere RCMP at 11 a.m. that the suspects were driving a 2007 Ford F-350 truck that was believed to be stolen and was being tracked by CPS HAWCS helicopter as they drove east out of Calgary and into Chestermere.

The truck took a hard turn and collided with a power pole on Rainbow Falls Road at Merganser Road West.

It was then followed into Chestermere Station where the two suspects abandoned the truck and fled on foot, according to RCMP reports.

Numerous members of the Chestermere RCMP and CPS were on scene and immediately arrested the suspects without incident.

“This is an example of the Calgary Police notifying us rapidly and us being able to work together to form a plan and create a seamless border between our two communities,” said Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry, Chestermere RCMP.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve worked together and it certainly won’t be the last time we work together to ensure that both communities are kept safe.”

Because the incident started in Calgary, both suspects were turned over to CPS for all charges. No injuries were reported and the truck was confirmed stolen from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The collision with the power pole resulted in significant damage to the pole and required police to close Rainbow Falls Road northbound lanes several hours.

The names of the suspects have not been released as the two are awaiting court dates.

Attempted theft

Cochrane RCMP is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying a man, who allegedly attempted to gain access to a vehicle in Cochrane on Feb. 12.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 12, Cochrane RCMP received a complaint of the attempted theft; a lone male was seen attempting to get into a vehicle at West Terrace Crescent in Cochrane.

The owner of the vehicle confronted the suspect who fled the scene in a grey minivan. A partial license plate of BHC–064 was obtained from the van.

When the suspect fled, he struck an accomplice vehicle, causing damage to the front driver side bumper of the van. The extent of damage to the other vehicle is unknown.

The accomplice vehicle is described as a white, mid 1990’s two-door car.

Cochrane RCMP believe this was a targeted incident and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible.

The primary suspect is described as a man in his late teens and was last seen wearing a red hat and a black hooded sweatshirt.

All terrain vehicles

Chestermere RCMP is seeking the assistance of the public to identify two suspects who were seen on all-terrain vehicles in the Chestermere Station area on Feb. 12.

At around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 12, two unknown persons were observed operating a pair of all-terrain vehicles in the area of Chestermere Station, the suspects entered the parking lot near Safeway and failed to stop.

The two were subsequently seen on Chestermere Lake, headed under the causeway and proceeded south.

The Chestermere RCMP would like to remind the public that operating all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes and snowmobiles within the Town of Chestermere is prohibited by law.

John Peake Park is the only area designated under the municipal bylaw as a staging area for off-highway vehicles, which are permitted to proceed directly from the parking area onto the ice surface of Chestermere Lake.

Off-highway vehicle operation is restricted to the hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and helmets are to be worn.

Chestermere RCMP have obtained photographs of the suspects.
