Chestermere Health Centre breaks ground

The proposed Chestermere Health Centre, which will be located in the Kinniburgh development in southeast Chestermere, held its official groundbreaking, March 29.

The Chestermere Health Centre will house a 22,000-square-foot facility that will act as a home for local physicians and help attract more family doctors to the community, said Karen Wourms, chair of the Chestermere Community Health Committee.

Community members, politicians and committee members were in attendance for the chilly morning sod turning.

The project was first envisioned by Town council and members of the Chestermere Community Health Committee in January of 2010.

ìWhen we moved here three years ago, I was surprised to see Chestermere didnít have its own public health facility,î said Wourms, who is a nurse working out of Strathmore.

ìI feel we can sustain our own facility and it would be a lot more accessible for our residents.î

No completion date has been released for the facility, but Wourms said it will be ëseveral months to complete the shell of the building,í before Alberta Health Services (AHS) takes over building the interior.

Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews was on site for the event and said years from now residents will appreciate the work of the individuals who helped get this project underway.

ìToday, we are here to mark the future with this sod turning. Years from now it will seem this health centre has always existed,î said Matthews.

ìItís important to remember the people now, and thank them with a loud round of applause.î
