Airdrie Rural RCMP and Beiseker RCMP are continuing to investigate a fatal two-vehicle collision on Highway 21 at the intersection with Highway 791 on June 14, according to Airdrie Rural RCMP Media Contact Constable Matt Gervais.

“We’re just trying to figure out what happened,” Gervais said. “If they stopped at the stop sign or if they didn’t stop at the stop sign? If speed became a factor that the person couldn’t have proceeded safely or whatever. Until we have more details from the investigation, we can’t really release much.”

Gervais said what officers do know is that the driver of a Hyundai Elantra was travelling eastbound on Highway 72 when his vehicle was struck at approximately 1:39 p.m. by a Lincoln SUV travelling southbound on Highway 791.

The 31-year-old male driver of the Elantra, from Calgary, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle. His identity is not being released at the request of his family, according to Gervais.

The 32-year-old female driver of the SUV, as well as a four-year-old boy who was sitting in the backseat, both residents of Calgary, were transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in stable, non life-threatening condition, according to EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux.

According to Gervais, charges against the driver of the SUV are pending.

Highway 21 was closed for approximately one hour, intermittently in each direction, to allow the collision analyst to conduct an investigation.

Suspicious Person

Airdrie RCMP is warning residents to be wary of strangers offering rides after a 16-year-old girl walking alone on Edmonton Trail was approached by a man in a vehicle on June 10.

“We just want to remind parents to make sure your kids are street smart,” said RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jennifer Weedmark.

“It’s hard to say if this man just thought he’d help her out or if there was more to it.”

According to Weedmark, the girl came to the Airdrie RCMP detachment with her parents and told officers that she had been approached by an older man in a small compact car or SUV.

He offered her a ride and when she declined he went on his way.

“What she did was exactly the right thing. She turned around, walked the opposite way from him and then went and found an adult or person in authority that she trusted and told them right away what happened.”

Weedmark said the girl described the man being around the age of 60 or older with sagging cheeks and no facial hair. He was wearing large, round, dark sunglasses, a blue polo shirt with a lighter coloured collar and a baseball cap. He may have gray hair.

If you have any information on any crime, call the Airdrie RCMP detachment at (403) 945-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
