In keeping with the priorities identified in the Bragg Creek Revitalization Plan, Rocky View County administration is almost ready to present a draft of the design guidelines for comment from the community.

Bragg Creek residents had the chance to participate in an “in-depth discussion” about the proposed design guidelines for the hamlet at an open house June 30, before the draft document is presented to council this fall.

“The open house was intended to provide the community with an update and a quick overview of the proposed guidelines,” said RVC planner Johnson Kwan. “The project team will be seeking more feedback and comment as the draft is being circulated in the summer.”

The open house, which Kwan said was well-attended by community residents, provided a “snapshot” of the proposed guidelines – including sections for the public and private realms. Kwan said “public realm” items included things like streetscapes, public open space and street furnishing, while “private realm” included tree management, building sizes, building scale and use of materials.

These guidelines, he said, will be used whenever any development is proposed for the area – either commercial or residential – to help maintain a cohesive design throughout the community.

“The proposed Bragg Creek Hamlet Design Guidelines will provide clear direction for designers, developers and property owners when they are applying for a Development Permit for their properties,” Kwan said.

“They will be used by County administration when evaluating the proposed developments, and will be a very useful implementation tool to ensure the hamlet maintains its unique character and to make Bragg Creek a truly special place to live and visit.”

The need for the document was identified as one of the highest priorities of the Bragg Creek Revitalization Plan, which was unanimously approved by council Dec. 8, 2015.

According to Kwan, the design guidelines will reference some of the material developed in 2007, when the hamlet’s Area Structure Plan (ASP) was implemented, but with more “strength.”

Through the design guidelines and the other priorities of the revitalization plan, Kwan said, RVC will be able to help the community of Bragg Creek re-establish after the devastation of the 2013 flooding.

“The draft Design Guidelines will be posted on the County website in the upcoming weeks, and community members and stakeholders are welcome to send in any of their comments and questions,” Kwan said. “Then, the guidelines will go before council in the fall of this year.”
