Avery Hunter, 29, of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation has been charged with armed robbery after he turned himself in to Cochrane RCMP on Dec. 9, after a warrantwas issued for his arrest.

He is alleged to have threatened a 76-year-old resident of Cochrane with a knife, Dec. 1, after the man backed out of a deal to sell Hunter a firearm.

According to Cochrane RCMP Corporal Matt Pumphrey, the two men were known to each other.

Hunter appeared in Cochrane Provincial Court on Dec. 15. The case was held over until Feb. 16, 2016 when he is expected to enter a plea.

Seven-year sentence

Jeffrey Axel Forsland, the man behind a string of armed robberies at financial institutions in southern Alberta in June, was sentenced to just more than seven years in prison in Camrose Provincial Court on Dec. 16, according to Beiseker RCMP Sergeant Glen Demmon.

Forsland was involved in a string of armed robberies in Onoway, Linden, Alliance and Acme from June 9 to June 22.

Three injured

Three people, including two children, were taken to hospital in Calgary by paramedics shortly after 3:30 p.m on Dec. 10 after a collision on Chestermere Boulevard and Rainbow Road.

EMS Spokesman Adam Loria said two children, between nine and 11 years old, were transported to the Alberta Children’s hospital with minor soft tissue injuries, in stable, non life-threatening condition.

A man in his 50s was transported in stable, non life-threatening condition with minor soft tissue injuries to the Foothills Medical Centre.

Corporal Paul Zanon of the Chestermere RCMP said the investigation is ongoing but that alcohol was not a factor.

“One vehicle got an intersection-related violation, struck the other one and the one vehicle continued on and struck another vehicle,” he said. “The liability is still being investigated. Charges are being considered.” Sentenced

A 31-year-old man from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation has been sentenced to five months in prison on a variety of charges stemming from a domestic violence incidence at his residence Sept. 29.

Sedrick Powderface pled guilty Dec. 10 to five charges in Cochrane Provincial Court. He was sentenced to five months in prison and fined $200 for possession of a firearm. He received a five-month sentence for pointing a firearm and another five-month sentence for possession of a weapon dangerous to the public. He was also fined $200 on each of those charges.

He also pled guilty to two counts of breach of conditions from a matter still before the courts and received 30-day prison sentences and $200 fines on both counts.

Powderface was ordered to serve all prison sentences concurrently.

The charges were laid after RCMP was called to the home after receiving a call about a domestic assault on Powderface’s wife and another woman.

According to Pumphrey, Powderface produced a weapon, discharging it as the women and his children fled the residence.

He attempted to flee the scene but was located later that morning, hiding in the backseat of a vehicle driven by two of his friends with a hunting rifle and ammunition in his possession.

Powderface will be in court on Jan. 7, 2016, to face charges of domestic assault against his wife and the other woman.
