Students in kindergarten to Grade 12 attending a school in Rocky View Schools (RVS) are being asked by Alberta Education to Think Globally by submitting their artwork to a new contest.

“In celebration of International Education Week (IEW) 2016, Alberta’s Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Ministry of Indigenous Relations, invites Alberta students…to participate in the Think Globally art contest which encourages students to celebrate the various First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures in Alberta and illustrate their beauty to the rest of the world,” Lindsay Harvey, press secretary to Minister of Education David Eggen said in an email to Airdrie City View.

IEW is an annual event celebrated the third week of November in more than 100 countries globally. According to Harvey, “IEW promotes the importance of international education and its benefits to society, and provides students across the province with opportunities to learn and gain a wider understanding of our world.”

Alberta Education has participated in IEW since 2006. The Think Globally art contest runs until Jan. 20, 2017 with the winners announced during Education Week, May 1 to 5, 2017. Winners will be chosen in five age categories. The winning artwork will hang in the Alberta Legislature building and be included on the Alberta Education website.

The contest is open to all students in RVS in kindergarten to Grade 12. Criteria for submitted artwork is that it be an original work, in colour and not digitally produced. Works must be two-dimensional only and illustrate one of 10 different themes. These themes include ancestors, history, language and reconciliation. More information about the contest criteria, including how to submit is available on the Alberta Education website at education.alberta.ca

“In an increasingly global and interconnected world, international education helps students build a global outlook and acquire international and intercultural knowledge, skills, and awareness,” Harvey said. “The Government supports young Albertans to be global citizens who understand international issues and are capable of communicating across different cultures.”
