Transgender Awareness Week will be observed in Airdrie from Nov. 13 to 20, with specific recognition of the Transgender Day of Remembrance Nov. 20 – an annual opportunity to “honour the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence,” according to a letter from Airdrie Pride Society president Kiersten Mohr.
“Transgender Awareness Week is a time for transgender people and their allies to take action and bring attention to the community by educating the public and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence that transgender people face,” Mohr said.
Following a unanimous council vote to approve the request, the transgender flag will also be raised at City Hall Nov. 20 to commemorate the day.
“Given the current and constant stream of negative news for this community in the United States, we feel it is incredibly important to raise the transgender flag in Airdrie to reinforce the safety and security of our amazing community,” Mohr said.
