Airdrie ready to host annual Terry Fox Run

Organizers say the 28th annual Terry Fox Run in Airdrie is open to whatever form of transit conceivable – participants can run, walk, rollerblade, bicycle or bring their dogs, strollers and wheelchairs – the important thing is to participate.

Organizers say the 28th annual Terry Fox Run in Airdrie is open to whatever form of transit conceivable – participants can run, walk, rollerblade, bicycle or bring their dogs, strollers and wheelchairs – the important thing is to participate.

“Anyone can come down,” said Joelle MacDonald, community organizer for Airdrie’s run on Sept. 15. “The run is a community-driven volunteer effort. I would love to show the rest of Canada what kind of spirit and heart and commitment we have in the community.”

This year marks the 33rd year the event has been held nationwide. Since Fox’s Marathon of Hope in 1980, the race has raised close to $500 million for cancer research.

MacDonald said she got involved as organizer because of Fox’s inspirational story.

“He is a significant hero in my own personal life, and I believe in continuing his cause,” she said. “Terry selflessly stood for hope and really genuinely had the best interests of cancer patients at heart. I have been touched by cancer, as have most people I know. I just felt compelled to help.”

Last year, 122 participants took part in Airdrie’s run, raising a total of $15,009. MacDonald hopes the race can raise $25,000 and attract 300 participants.

“I think we’re excited to just build on the momentum from last year,” she said. “I’d love to see 300 (people) at this race.”

The event will begin at 9 a.m. at Nose Creek Park. The course is a 2.5-kilometre run or walk through the park, and participants can go around the track as many times as they want. Course marshals will be on route until 11 a.m.

Following the run, participants will be able to enjoy yet to be determined live music and a free community barbecue will be available.

Funds raised by the foundation go directly to support cancer research projects. To volunteer or for more information, contact Joelle MacDonald at 403-945-9936.
