The Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) was busy during the May long weekend, May 17 to 21.

“We were up front that we would be out there in full force,” said Sheriff Jason Graw, spokesman for the ITU.

“But the officers were still busy.”

The Airdrie ITU is responsible for responding to 911 calls along the Highway 2 corridor between Calgary and Didsbury as well as conducting targeted traffic enforcement in the Airdrie, Beiseker and Didsbury RCMP detachment areas.

The unit consists of sheriff highway patrol and RCMP Traffic Services members.

Graw said the ITU brought in extra resources to help with the expected spike in traffic and traffic violations. Officers were pulling drivers over for speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt, driving carelessly through rural intersections and for driving impaired.

Notable incidents from the weekend include:

Speedy teen

A 15-year-old teen faces four charges after getting pulled over near the Crossfield overpass on May 20 for driving 77 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit.

The black Nissan Altima was spotted travelling southbound on Highway 2 going 187 km/hr.

When the ITU member pulled the car over, the accused female attempted to switch positions with the front seat passenger in order to hide the fact that she did not have a drivers license, police said.

As a result, the teen from Red Deer is faced with charges for speeding 77 km/hr over the posted limit, driving an uninsured vehicle, driving without having a license as well as failing to provide proof of vehicle registration.

On the run

The Airdrie ITU also attempted to pull over two motorcyclists near the Crossfield overpass on May 18 for driving 30 km/hr over the posted limit.

However, when an officer, riding a Harley Davison police edition motorcycle attempted to pull the two speeders over, only one stopped.

The driver of a yellow Yamaha R1 stopped for the police, while the driver of a blue 2011 Suzuki GSX R750 fled southbound on Highway 2 at a high rate of speed, police report.

The officer contacted his partner who was further south on Highway 2.

The second officer was successful in apprehending the driver who at that point, was travelling at 180 km/hr.

The driver, a 25-year-old man from Calgary now faces charges for speeding 70 km/hr over the posted speed limit, speeding at 29 km/hr over the posted limit and failing to stop for a peace officer.

The driver of the Yamaha, a 22-year-old man from Calgary, has been charged with speeding 26 km/hr over the limit and operating a motorcycle without holding the proper class operators license.

If you have information on any unsolved crime, call Airdrie RCMP at 403-945-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
