The Airdrie Fire Department responded to a structural fire at Good Shepherd School, located in the Thorburn neighbourhood in east Airdrie, on July 20. The call requesting emergency services was received at 2:44 p.m.

Eleven firefighters and six firefighting apparatuses, including firetrucks, were deployed to the scene.

According to a press release, the school’s main hallway was filling with light smoke due to a faulty HVAC unit motor.

Upon arriving on the scene, the fire crew discovered light smoke conditions in the interior hallway between the main school and the outdoor portable classrooms. Firefighters forced the exterior door of a portable unit open, gaining access to the classroom.

When it was discovered the smoke was originating from a faulty HVAC motor, power to the HVAC unit was isolated and ventilation efforts were implemented to remove smoke from the area, read a July 21 press release.

The school did receive minimal damages but no estimated cost of repairs was available at press time. Also as of press time, no injuries have been reported.

The roadway adjacent to the school was temporarily closed off to vehicle and pedestrian traffic as a safety precaution while firefighters handled the situation.
