Airdrie, Crossfield fire crews on scene at Highline Mushroom fire

"Everybody is safe, that's the main part for us," said Mike O'Brien, the farm manager. "Everyone is evacuated. That was our focus once it started. Right now, the fire departments and emergency services are working on it and that's where we are."

Crossfield and Airdrie fire crews are currently battling a fire at the Highline Mushroom facility, located between the two municipalities just east of the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.

While representatives of the departments could not be immediately reached for comment on Jan. 23 at 3:30 p.m., two employees of Highline Mushroom confirmed the blaze was underway.

"Everybody is safe, that's the main part for us," said Mike O'Brien, the farm manager. "Everyone is evacuated. That was our focus once it started. Right now, the fire departments and emergency services are working on it and that's where we are."

O'Brien said as of 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, there was still no indication what had caused the blaze. He said one of the company's facilities is fine, and it's the smaller production facility that has been affected.

"Obviously, it's very stressful for everyone here," he said, adding Highline Mushroom employs about 300 workers at the Crossfield facility.

This story will be updated with information from the fire departments once it is made available.
