4-H News: Hall of Fame inductees

Two Albertans, known for their dedication to the province’s youth and outstanding leadership in their communities, are being inducted into the Alberta 4-H Hall of Fame.

Two Albertans, known for their dedication to the province’s youth and outstanding leadership in their communities, are being inducted into the Alberta 4-H Hall of Fame.

George and Judy Andrews, from Barrhead, have dedicated more than 50 years to the 4-H program in addition to numerous other community projects. They have inspired parents to become leaders and 4-H members to look beyond their projects and embrace all that 4-H has to offer at the district, regional and provincial levels.

“The success of the Alberta 4-H program can be credited to the hard work of its many volunteers who give their time, energy and talents to clubs across Alberta,” said Evan Berger, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. “The level of commitment these inductees have to 4-H inspires and influences the lives of youth and many have gone on to be successful and accomplished leaders in their communities and in our agriculture industry.”

The 2011 inductees demonstrate the ideal qualities of past hall of famers. They show outstanding leadership in promoting the 4-H motto of “Learn to Do by Doing” and live out the 4-H pledge of service and commitment to club, community and country through all levels of the organization.

George and Judy will join an elite group of 75 Alberta men and women inducted into the Alberta 4-H Hall of Fame since it was established in 1971. They will both be officially honoured during an induction ceremony at the annual 4-H Leaders’ Conference in Edmonton January 14, 2012.

• Balzac Beef Club

The Balzac 4-H Beef Club held our first meeting of the new 4-H year at the Airdrie Ag Building, Oct. 3. Everyone is looking forward to another exciting year.

Our 2011-2012 executive includes Alex Shuttleworth, president; Corbin Jones, vice president; Barret Jones, treasurer; and Clinton Miller, secretary. Daryl Shuttleworth is our returning leader. The assistant leaders and the junior leaders will be announced at a later date.

Weigh Day is planned for Nov. 19 at Three Cross Cattle Company. We would like to thank our hosts for supporting this annual event for our club. November is National 4-H Month; remember to show your 4-H colours.

• Central Beiseker Beef and Multi Club

Another season of 4-H has come and gone and we couldn’t have asked for a more successful 2010-2011 year.

We began back in November 2010 with our steer weigh-in, weighing-in 27 steers and six heifer projects. Weights varied from 600 to 800 pounds and a variety of breeds. December soon came with a great turn out for our annual bake sale at the Beiseker Christmas Market.

In January, public speaking took place. Second level public speaking was at Keoma Hall. Each and every 4-H member had a unique and interesting speech.

For many Junior members it was their first time speaking in front of a crowd and they couldn’t have done a better job. We had three young members move onto the third level of public speaking, well done McKenzie, Alex and Justin!

Our 4-H Fun Day was in March where the members, leaders, and parents enjoyed a fun day of Laser Tagging in Calgary. It was a great way to bond with the rest of the members while getting some exercise.

May was here before we knew it - a busy month for the 4-H club. The beginning of May we did our Annual Highway clean-up which was 25 miles of cleaning ditches. Two weeks later was our Achievement Day at the Beiseker Arena where our steers were placed on their overall confirmation and members displayed their showmanship skills. At the end of May the 4-H club headed into Calgary for 4-H on Parade.

Three of our members were awarded first place in their grooming classes! Lastly, to finish off the year we had our Steer Show and Sale in June where we said farewell to our steers.

It was great to see all the members’ hard work throughout the year being displayed in the ring.

The 2010-2011 year wouldn’t have been so successful if it wasn’t for the unconditional support of the donors, the buyers and the community. We would like to extend an invitation to our 2010-2011 4-H Banquet taking place Nov. 6 at the Beiseker Community Hall.

Please contact our Leader Michelle Boyer to RSVP.
