Irricana to host drive-in movie and car show Sept. 11

For the second year in a row, the Town of Irricana will be hosting a classic car parade and show-and-shine, followed by a double feature drive-in movie and fireworks display, on Sept. 11.

For the second year in a row, the Town of Irricana will be hosting a classic car parade and show-and-shine, followed by a double feature drive-in movie and fireworks display, on Sept. 11.

According to Barrie Hutchinson, interim chief administrative officer for the Town of Irricana, this year’s rendition will coincide with the Junior Rodeo, located at the Irricana Bev MacDonald Rodeo Grounds. He added the Town wanted to marry the two events to provide residents and visitors with a jam-packed day of fun.

“[It’s about] getting back together,” he said.  “We’ve been blocked out with COVID and it’s nice to get back and get some gatherings going on and have some fun.”

The Junior Rodeo begins at 11 a.m., while the classic car parade will kick off at 4 p.m. Hutchinson said anybody with a set of classic wheels can participate in the cruise, which will snake its way through the streets of Irricana.

Following the parade, vintage vehicle operators will gather on Main Street for an official show-and-shine, with performances from the Haymakers and recording artist Ronnie Kerr.

Last year, residents showed up in great numbers in September to see a double-feature that included a showing of Grease, followed by American Graffiti.

Organizers of the free Sept. 11 event are hopeful for a similar turnout this year, and are planning to showcase family-friendly film Space Jam, followed by Blues Brothers for older audiences.

The firework display will set off at dusk, Hutchinson said, in between the two showings.

Guests of the car show and drive-in movie screenings are encouraged to bring their vehicle or lawn chair to enjoy the evening’s festivities.
