Everything is getting ready for this year's highly anticipated annual Crossfield Elks #416 Demolition Derby on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Crossfield Rodeo Grounds.
The Derby promises an action-packed day of high-octane excitement, with gates opening at 1 p.m. and the derby itself kicking off at 4 p.m. Enthusiastic derby drivers will have early access, as the gates swing open for them at 11 a.m.
The Crossfield Elks #416, a local non-profit organization, is a proud member of the Elks of Canada, a national group committed to charitable work and public service. Rooted in a tradition of service and friendship, the lodge's members contribute to the welfare of their community and beyond.
Brandt Selent, a member of the Crossfield Elks and one of the event's organizers, expressed that the demolition derby holds a special place within the club's activities. He highlighted that this event stands as the club's most significant fundraising opportunity, emphasizing that every dollar earned ultimately circles back to support the local community of Crossfield.
“This year specifically we donated $2,000 worth of tools [to the local school]," he said. "The shop was really lacking tools for everything students needed to learn. Especially with this kind of event being a demolition derby we have a lot of students coming through Crossfield that end up building cars or helping out."
“We also do a lot of donations towards school programs for sports, and also minor sports for youth.”
This year, the demolition derby schedule is packed with entertainment for all ages. Attendees can indulge in delectable treats from food trucks on the grounds and enjoy a variety of refreshments, including liquor sales. The main attraction remains the "Smash 'em Crash 'em" electric action of the demolition derby itself.
“It’s always a big hit with the kids watching those cars go up and smash each other all day," he said. "It’s pretty fun to watch their faces get all excited when that happens."
Selent mentioned the event also features 50 to 100 cc mini-dirt bike races for the kids.
After the adrenaline-pumping spectacle of cars colliding in a whirlwind of controlled chaos, the excitement doesn't end. The event transitions into a cabaret that begins right after the derby, ensuring that the lively atmosphere carries on well into the evening.
As attendees arrive for the event, organizers remind everyone that free parking is available within the rodeo grounds.
While the fun and festivities continue well into the night, minors will not be permitted past 11 p.m.
For interested attendees, tickets to the demolition derby can be purchased at the gate for $20. For kids aged 12 and under, entrance is free.
